Julie Jaffee Nagel, PhD.
Licensed Psychologist, Psychoanalyst

Biography

Julie Jaffee Nagel, Ph.D. has long blended her hybrid experiences and education in music and mental health. She is well acquainted with performance anxiety and other psychological obstacles to positive self esteem and personal and professional fulfillment. She has developed her understanding from years of personal, therapeutic, and educational experiences. Her earliest ambition to become a concert pianist was pursued through earning two degrees in piano performance at The Juilliard School.

After many years performing and teaching, but always baffled by her own stage fright, she entered The University of Michigan to earn her MSW, MA, and Ph.D. in psychology and social work. Her 1987 dissertation is titled "An Examination of Commitment to Careers in Music: Implications for Alienation from Vocational Choice". Subsequently she trained to become a psychoanalyst at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.

In addition to her general clinical private practice in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she has shared her hybrid work with audiences of all ages, occupations, and experience levels to enthusiastic acclaim. She has published widely in both scholarly and popular journals.

Dr. Nagel is available to present formal papers, informal talks, workshops, seminars, coaching sessions, and consultations with musicians, artists, athletes, academics, business professionals, educators, psychoanalysts and others who are blocked in their efforts to enjoy successful performances and suffer from anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties.

She also gives presentations on interdisciplinary topics such as music, mind, and emotion. Dr. Nagel also is available for individual consultations, evaluations, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis.

"I've heard nothing but excellent feedback...the comments have ranged from 'inspiring and informative" to "I feel like I've had a religious experience". Julie's talk was informative for musicians and teachers, yet appropriate for the many children and their parents who attended. Adapting your comments to suit such a diverse audience presented a challenge but you handled it beautifully"
